Creative: Swirly nails

My friend Carly had these funky swirls on her nails at the bar a few weeks ago. I asked her about it and she said it was super easy, so she sent me the youtube and a creative endeavor was born. I bought the supplies and brought them over to Miquila's before the party and played with it for a bit before the party. This is how it came out. Used the video almost to a T. It was fun and looks pretty cute but is a bit messy and hard to clean up. Carly seemed to have the most success with it!

Creative: casting off

I am FINALLY finished. I learned how to CAST OFF, using the link provided. It wound up being the same link that I learned it from innitially. It was actually the easiest step of the whole process. However, it could also have been that I've had so much practice at it. Can't wait to give it to Aileen! It's the width of my bed!

Creative: Hair styles

I got my hair cut on New Years Eve. It looked really great. However, I tried it again, to style it like she did and I could not. A few days later I got a call from the hair salon. They wanted to know how my hair cut experience was because she was a new stylist. I thought she was amazing and I told her so. However I said that I couldn't redo the hair style, so she offered me a complimentary consultation.

So she played with my hair for a half an hour as I tried to write everything down. What I didn't do was take pictures or in some other way try to recall the styles, in a meaningful way, so while the styles were fresh in my head I tried the styles, this time with photographic evidence. I even came up with some more!! This show Melissa and Joey, has Melissa with the same haircut as me so I've been getting alot of ideas!! Here are a few.

Post shower, blow drying and using my new ceramic round brush. Mucho volume!

Different angles, a half french braid on each side

Two small ponies, tied afterwards

Then, put the two small ponies in another pony

Half pony on bottom, then poufed up on top and secured with bobby pins

Continued hair style from above, taken loose strands and turned them into a bun with more bobby pins

Three small twists, secured with bobby pins. Then two additional pieces(one from each side) brought back with a pony tail

Hair above with sweat band

Final look for the night which included all the prep prior, plus curling each section of hair for 20 seconds total and lots of hair spray. Don't you see all the curls?

Creative: Nearly done

With the scarf that is. I'm going to learn how to cast off this week. It's super long though!! It's possible it has a lot of holes as well though....

Creative: scarf again

SO I couldn't get any more creative with this week's creative then to work more on my scarf. However, I did do it outside in my beautiful backyard!

Creative: Knitting again

I was hoping to be able to post a picture that shows me a little farther, or at least a little more even, but I spent most of my friday evening knitting and working on my first little project. Part of me wants to give it as a present, but part of me thinks there are too many imperfections, and there continues to be some. So my goal is to give it someone very deserving, but I don't know if I want to subject someone to that.

Creative: Pumpkin Carving

Sunday afternoon, Dan and I met up with Todd and Miquila at a loft in SOMA for a pumpkin potluck. I made my worldfamous salad and my roommates girlfriend just gave me this Korean Noodle dish called Jap Chae to bring with me, which was SUPER nice! We hung out and carved pumpkins. I chose an easy one, because I didn't have a large amount of practice as a kid and I always try wayyyy more complicated then I should and it looks bad! So I succeeded and now have pumpkins to decorate my classroom with!

Creativity:Knitting

After a particularly henius week last year, I took my coworker/friend Liz to Michaels so I could find a new creative outlet. This was probably the first stage of what I am currently doing now with my chart! I bought nearly $100 worth of crafts including scrapbooking, jewelery making and knitting stuff. With the exception of some scrapbooking pages I have yet to touch the stuff. UNTIL TODAY...

I was online with my old roommate Amy figuring out what creative thing to do, and wound up convincing her to come over so we could figure out how to knit. After unsuccessfully using several videos and websites, we found this one and this one. The first one is actually a series of videos and that taught us how to create the slip knot and how to cast(and is used to teach kids, so actually pretty helpful!). The second one was super helpful because her needles were so big I could actually see what she was doing!!! while we each remade ours several times, I can now say that I have done at least 6 rows without redoing it!

I think I have found my creative outlet for the next few weeks! Its challenging enough that it takes alot of energy, yet it doesn't actually involve my mind, so my mind literally empties. It's like my own little meditation! Huge fan so far! Even if my first scarf will probably only fit on a doll or a very small child!

Creativity: Envelopes

I was unable to send out the cards I made last week to my Grandma's. I gave them the biggest pictures of me, thinking that they would appreciate them the most. However, the card I had written out had an envelope that was just too small!! So all week the cards have been sitting next to my bed with my ginormous face looking at me every day.

Waiting for a phone call back from Adrianna(she just had to readjust her hands free set, she claims), I decided to make some envelopes for the picture/card to go into. I used this website, and just modified it slightly. First, I used 12 x 12 paper, and therefore second, didn't need the extra paper to complete the envelope. I used scrapbook paper that I bought last year that has actually come in handy!!

My only worry now though, is that the envelope might be too big or weigh too much for a regular stamp.

Creativity: Cards

So innitially I wanted one of my categories to write a card each week, and have it be this cathartic process. Also, who really writes cards anymorees. And really, doesn't everyone love receiving cards? I mean I remember in College that was all I wanted to receive. But I'm starting to become an adult(just starting), and I realize that I should start getting better at cards. So I decided to write a few today as my "creativity". I'm also super sick and trying not to talk today so I can get ready for my dress up/cultural event this weekend LAS VEGASSSS

Creativity: Cake Decorating

Ellie, my old roommate, is leaving for Mexico. Super sad, but gave me a great opportunity to be creative! Knowing my old, old, old roommate Amy was into cake decorating, I decided to call her up and enlist her help to make and decorate(the creative part) a cake. Chose a cookie cake instead of traditional cake and had wayyyyy to much fun using her little decorating tool. When all was said and done, it actually looked pretty ridiculous, mostly because I decided I couldn't waste any of the frosting, so the entire box of confectionery sugar, plus stick of butter, plus whipping cream is completely on the cookie cake!!

Note to reader, I am already ashamed at the amount of sugar/frosting there is on the cake. This is why I am not even showing you the absolute finished product.

Creativity: Watching someone else do it

I don't think this really counts, but I had an idea to make something and Miquila put it all together. I bought or had the supplies? That's gotta count right? I think unfortunately, that is the one thing that I will not be able to do this week. However, I do have a plan. We will see...

Creativity: Pen Flower Bouquet

So a few weeks ago, when I made up this chart, I really wanted to put creativity on this, even though I was most worried I wouldn't meet that requirement every week! Luckily I bought this book called the Big-Ass Book of Crafts a few years ago for a school fundraiser. This book is written by Mark Montano, who was on While you were out and the Host of 10 years younger. The crafts are pretty easy to do, but I've only tried a few of them! Anyways, so book in hand and idea in my head I went to Michaels to buy the supplies to create this flower bouquet. I liked this idea because I too often loose pens. In theory, this will make it so I always have a pen. I am afraid that the pen will go dry though? I hope the beads will prevent that. I also find it strange that he didn't include the beads in the directions.

Random fun fact-yesterday at work, I saw that the attendence clerk also had this on her desk. Super random!

Creative: Sephoria

Ok, so I keep cheating on this category. I may need to figure out a better way around this one. My mom decided that "I need to wear more makeup"(Lets not even get into that) and gave me money for my birthday for it. So I took Miquila to get a mini makeover. Many color combinations later(hence the creative part), I bought a neutral eye pallete, eye liner, aMAZing(Miquila emphasis) concelear, and I FINALLY have two different shades of lipstick that actually look good on me! YAY!! So now I get to play with it and see what I can do. I still don't think that I am going to quite wear it daily, like I think my mother intends, but at least I have some more options!!

Creative: Slideshow

So I cheated a little bit, and have been making my own rules with this category and the cultural category. I did buy materials at Michaels for a craft, and have plans for other creativity, however this week I was technologically creative.I decided this morning when I shot up at 8am to make a slideshow of my life. Yes, thats right, everything from France in High school to riding a camel. I made this for my students so that they get to know me a little better the first few days of school. I also made a slide show of the major content of the year. I know its a little bit of a cop out, but I did get to be creative in choosing what pictures to include and the layout and whatnot. Oh well!

Work hard, Play hard.

I started off the summer pretty rough. I heard some upsetting news, and I went through a lot of change, which is something I suck at.

Yet, I overcame, and for over a month I had an absolutely excellent summer. For the first time in my life I completely enjoyed free time.

But the school year is starting again, and I tend to get super wrapped up in it and super emotional so I am trying to give myself an outlet, actually 8 outlets.

I have created a chart for myself, and this blog to keep myself accountable. Each week, in addition to all the things I need to do in order to keep myself alive(laundry, sleep etc), and the money flowing(work), I am committing myself to complete activities in eight categories.

Drum roll please....

Dress up-I tend to ignore my body and my looks. An entire day can go by where I don't look in a mirror. While I am not intending to be superficial, I would like to spend at least one day each week getting ready and taking care of myself. It could be for work, for a date, or for an evening out on the town.

Reading-This one is pretty obvious, but I am actually an avid reader, who can sometimes go for weeks without reading, since I ignore my need to learn.

Nature-Being outside, and breathing in the air, centers me and calms me in a way that little else can. I am committing to do this at LEAST once a week. It can be as little as sitting in my backyard for an hour or more, or as much as, hiking, paddle boating etc.

Physical-Except for getting physical. I mean Elle said it perfectly when she said "Exersize produces endorphins, endorphins make you happy and happy people just don't shoot their husbands." I mean I need to protect my fictitious husband right?

Cooking-While I am not an awful cook, I tend to stay towards the stuff that I know how to cook, which sucks really, because I have all these great cookbooks, so I need to cook at least one new meal a week!

Movie-So my house, the apartment I live in, is HOOKED up! They have, or can have nearly every movie I could ever want just by a click of a mouse!! Since I tend to stick to VERY girly movies, I intend to watch one new movie each week. This does not necessarily mean a brand new movie, it just means a new movie to me, one that I have not seen. This can be anything from the Godfather, to Inception. Please suggest movies that you think I should see!!

Cultural-This one is a late arrival, and might be a little difficult to always complete, yet I want to do something each week that is touristy in some way. This can be going to a new restaurant, heading to a museum, or hitting up an outdoor market! Since I do intend to go away, I will also count sleeping at a house not at my own(but not like just crashing somewhere else), to give myself a little wiggle room here. This category was initially going to be social, but since I do that pretty naturally, I wanted to expand it a bit. It should include others!

Creative-It is this category however, that I want to bolster the most. It is also the one I am most worried about succeeding at. I am by nature a very crafty person and even have an artistic bone or two in my body. Yet, I have gotten so lazy, or forgetful of my talents, that I had to buy a book entitled "Get a Hobby", just to remind myself of my own interests. I have rested on my interests being education and travel for so long, that I feel as though I am one dimensional. I am depending on this category to add some more dimensions, and passions to myself!

So tune in every few days, as I reflect on the different categories. I am publishing this, so I keep myself honest, but the benefit to you is you could learn about a new book, a new/old movie, a new hiking spot, something cultural in the area, a new recipe, a new outdoor spot etc. So please hold me to this!

I need to be a well rounded individual, and not a traveling, teaching robot!
